Visit the White Cliffs of Dover

DOVER

There is no doubt that White Cliffs are one of this country's spectacular natural features and sign. You can hike up and appreciate the beauty of nature, dramatic clifftop edges and panorama view over the English Channel and French coast.

White Cliffs of Dover are located in the Dover town in the Kent county in the south of the UK. It’s a major port for ferries to Calais, in France.  The iconic cliffs span not only in Dover but 8 miles across the south-east coastline. The White Cliffs were named after its chalky white composition.

How to get there?

Getting to Dover from London is super easy by train, takes about 1 to 2 hours only, depending on which train you'll take. You can easily drive down to Dover as well for a day trip. There are parking spaces just near the hiking trail, which are paid. If you decide to take the train, it leaves from Kings Cross/St Pancras to Dover Priory Station with South Eastern Railway.

The city itself is fairly "normal", I have not personally visited the city much, as my main highlight was a visit to White Cliffs and picnicking in the nature overlooking to Dover Castle. Nevertheless, if you are arriving by train, you'll see the city briefly as you pass it to get to the coast. From Marine Parade Beach you'll quickly see signs to get you to the White Cliffs.

Once you get to the White Cliffs National Trust center, you'll follow the path to hike up, you'll have few pathways to follow. The best time to visit the cliffs are around from May to October time, where the weather may be warmer, but in the UK you never know.

What else to see?

Apart from the beautiful cliff walks, you may want to visit the medieval castle of Dover as well. The Dover Castle was founded in the 11th century and is the largest castle in England apparently.  You have some great views on the castle not too far from the car park on White Cliffs as well.

Another attraction in Dover is the visit to Secret Wartime Tunnels. The passageways under Dover Castle was used during WWII's Operation Dynamo.
