DAMNOEN SUDAKFloating market is a thing in Asia. You'll find both young and elderly people paddling the boats, that sometimes you are asking yourself how do those people have so much strength in their arms. You'll see them paddling with their legs too. In addition, be prepared to bargain and shop while you are cruising around the canal. Many people have their stands either on the side of the water or they are directly selling on the boat.
While I was in Bangkok, we went for a half day trip outside of the city to visit one of the biggest and also most touristic floating market - Damnoen Sudak. The floating market is located in the Damnoen Sudak district, about 100 km from Bangkok. The market relies purely on the tourism, both local and international. The whole area is a maze of canals where you are able to go through it only by a boat. Just outside of the market, you may see the traditional houses and hose local people live nearby.
The only downside of this market, is that it is crowded and designed for tourists. Therefore the prices may be a bit higher then usual. However, it is nowadays hard to find an authentic floating market, as all of them are suggested and visited by tourists more and more. Damnoen Sudak floating market is open from early morning until around lunch time. Therefore visit during early AM hours to see the busy life around here. However, if you are looking for less touristy and smaller floating markets, you may visit Amphawa market, which gets more busier in the evening time.
We planned our half day trip to the market through Asia Discovery tour, where they have picked us up and get us back to the city. I remember how it started very frustrating and funny. However, overall the experience was lovely and worth your half day visit to see how they trade on the water.
